#204----Oil Filters
There is more to oil filters than filtering oil!

With all the cam and lifter wear problems due to oil changes and reformulations (see OIL tech. article), the filter is next in line for examination. We dont want to be like our boneheaded customer lovebug (see Oil tech. article for his profile) who was more concerned with the color and name than the specifications of the product.

There is more to the filter than just filtering oil. As you would think, the finer the oil was filtered, the cleaner it would be; and that is true. However, that is not the end of the story. The finer the filter, the more difficult it is to pump the oil through it. This creates backpressure in the filter cartridge and in the oil system, back to the pump. Now, the pump relief valve opens and dumps (bypasses) the oil because it senses this higher backpressure.

If the oil is cold, not up to normal operating temperature, this backpressure is higher yet. All this backpressure can create problems such as causing the filter to split. To prevent this a by-pass valve is installed in the filter that bypasses all the oil unfiltered, around the filter, into the engines vital parts.  Obviously, the finer the filtration, the hotter the oil will need to be to flow through the filter media. As you can imagine, there is a considerable period of time when much of the oil gets bypassed. Also, as the filter media begins to pick up dirt, the more restrictive the oil filter becomes causing even more oil to be bypassed.

Bypassing dirty oil through your engine is not good for parts life; and for a performance engine this is an intolerable situation. Better filtration is always a laudable goal, but bypassing dirty oil every time you start up your engine is causing more dirt to be circulated than you would get with a filter that allowed full flow even with cold oil. Stock and commonly available filters (you know all the names) brag about how fine their filters are and how clean they can keep your oil however, what they dont tell you or want you to know about is the bypass situation.

Our customers should not be forced to use filters that allow dirt to run through their precious engines. For this reason, we are now offering the JOMAR full-flow oil filters for Mopars made with pride in the U.S.A. These filters do not contain bypass valves, so all of the oil is filtered 100% of the time. Their extra thick filter housing withstands pressures up to 600 P.S.I. These filters also contain a standpipe for more complete filter coverage. Also, an anti-drain back valve is incorporated in the filter to keep the oil from draining out of the oil system when the engine is stopped. This is what keeps the hydraulic lifters from clattering when the engine is cold because the system is full of air. The magnum truck guys are familiar with this problem.

The filter is a 20-micron element for full flow with minimum restriction. It has 440 square inches of 18/20-micron filter material vs. about 300 square inches found on most common (wallymart) filters. Independent tests using Mobil1 10W-30 @ 70 (that is cold oil) flowed 8 GPM with only 8 PSI pressure drop that is very good!

We are now stocking these real filters and recommend them for all applications. Fits all L.A., Magnum truck, and Big Block engines. Order part# 11050. And you will sleep better, too!
