Issue #18 What is a "Real Chrysler Cam?"
The key to what is a "Real Chrysler Cam" is based on the lifter diameter. The ever popular Chevy lifters are .842" diameter - the Ford lifters are .875" - and Mopar lifters are a whopping .904".
"So what?" you ask.
Just this! As the lifter diameter gets larger the cam control point can be moved out toward the edge of the lifter a greater distance.
"So what?" you ask again.
As the contact point of the cam on the lifter moves out toward the edge of the lifter, the lifter (and valve) will lift, and open the valve quicker - a lot quicker!
Now, if I have to explain what opening the valve quicker means to engine power, go back to playing video games on your cellular device!
The power increase is considerable. Enough to have rules changed to outlaw Mopars in certain types of stock racing, like dirt tracks in the Midwest for example! However, what the sharper Chevy racer did was machine their lifter bores for Mopar lifters. See, even Chevy racers want to run "real" Mopar cams!
Now, the problem for Mopar engine builders is that there isn't enough of you for cam grinders to waste time resetting machines for Mopars when they could be just leaving the cam grinding machine setup for Chevy lobes on a Chrysler shaft. They are good enough for who they are for. Yeah right (actually, from a profit point of view I can't blame them)!
After all, it is a Chrysler cam, just not a "real" Chrysler cam!
One of the pioneers in "real" chrysler cams was my friend Jack Engle, the original founder of Engle Racing Cams - back in the day! And ancient rumors told stories of the notoriously innovative NASCAR engine builder, Smokey Yunick, who was one of the first, if not the first, to run Mopar lobes on a Chevy shaft in NASCAR and get by with it.
"Were his cars fast?" you ask.
Yes, that is why he is famous. |
